Miss Tonga eyes better tourism for the region


MISS Tonga’s Rosemarie Louise Fili is in full support of developing the tourism industry in the region if she wins the 2013 crown.

“Tourism industry in the Pacific region is like a passport to peace,” she said.

Tonga Govt to spend thousands of dollars on tourism and manufacturing


The Tongan government has allocated more than half a million US dollars to the development of small businesses in the tourism and manufacturing industries.

The Ministry of Commerce, Tourism and Labour CEO, Tatafu Moeaki, says under the scheme, half will go to small enterprises developing new tourism products.

Questions over Tonga air safety hurts tourist industry


Real Tonga’s MA-60 aircraft was a gift from the Chinese Government to Tonga… but it’s chequered safety record has caused alarm in Auckland.

The planes aren’t registered to fly by any Western government and New Zealand has put millions of dollars in tourism aid funding on hold until it’s satisfied the aircraft is safe.

New Zealand withholds $8 million tourism investment for Tonga


New Zealand said tourism aid to Tonga will remain suspended until safety concerns about a Chinese-made aircraft gifted to the tiny South Pacific nation are resolved.

A planned tourism support program worth $8 million (NZ$10.5 million) over three years was put on hold earlier this year after the New Zealand-run Chathams Pacific airline announced it was pulling out of Tonga, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said in a statement. It will remain on hold until safety concerns about a Xian MA60 aircraft gifted to Tonga by China are resolved, he said.

Safety warning over Tonga’s new domestic aircraft


The Government has suspended millions of dollars in tourism aid to Tonga after learning the kingdom wants to use an unsafe plane.

Tonga has been gifted a MA60 for its Real Tonga airline to use for domestic flights by China. The plane has one of the world’s worst safety records.

Since 2009 there have been 11 serious incidents involving MA60s, three of them in the last two months.

Tonga ferry may offer cruises and overseas freight delivery


The operators of Tonga’s inter-island ferry, MV Otuanga’ofa, are considering cruises and freight delivery to supplement its income and make use of downtime.

The vessel, supplied by Japan, and which came into service at the end of 2010, was the permanent replacement for the Princess Ashika, which sank in 2009 claiming 74 lives.

Capacity Building For Tonga Tourism


Tourism industry stakeholders in Tonga are currently benefitting through training and technical assistance provided by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation under the Pacific Regional Tourism Capacity Building Programme (PRTCBP), a project funded by the European Union.

This capacity building activity is to enhance the marketing skills of the tourism industry including support with the latest campaign: “Tonga: the True South Pacific”, which ends in June.

Heilala Festival 2013 to be held June 24


The Heilala Week Festival 2013 is confirmed at Vuna Wharf from June 24 through to July 6, a post on the Miss Heilala Supporters Face Book page says.

Former Miss Heilala and strong supporter of the festival, Tafolosa Kaitapu Bloomfield, shared the post and confirmed the date to her friends.
