AUD$1.1million for Police Development Program | Matangi Tonga


The Australian Government has committed AUD$1,191,094 million to support the continuation of a Tonga Police Development Program (TPDP) for 2014-15.

The Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva and the Acting Australian High Commissioner to Tonga Sophie Temby signed a Subsidiary Arrangement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Tanoa Hotel Group to transform Dateline Hotel | Matangi Tonga


The Tanoa Hotel Group from Fiji will take over Tonga’s International Dateline Hotel for redevelopment this year,  aiming to transform the seafront hotel and reopen as Tanoa Dateline in mid-2017 with a Tongan four star standard.

Prime Minister Tu’ivakano visits Singapore | Matangi Tonga


Tonga’s Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano arrived in Singapore yesterday to renew relations with the Government of Singapore. His visit will end on Thursday, 1 May.

Lord Tu’ivakano will pay a visit to Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loon today 28 April, to promote assistance in areas of mutual interest between Tonga and Singapore.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Pacific Island nation of Tonga but experts say there is no threat of a tsunami.

The quake reportedly struck in waters northeast of the Tongan capital, Nuku’alofa, at about 7pm local time on Saturday.
