Time for Tonga to shine at World…


The labour of love Charles Tonga embarked upon when driving south from Brisbane to watch his homeland in the 2008 World Cup has been superseded by a considerable distance, as he invests in Mate Ma’a Tonga’s future.

When Tonga finished his brief NRL career as a frontrower, he was initially content to step back and spectate, when Tonga played Samoa in the group stage of the previous cup, hosted by Australia.

Mate Ma‘a Tonga visits Parliament


Tonga’s Rugby League Squad, Mate Ma’a Tonga arrived in Tonga this morning, 10 October for a five-day visit before they leave for England for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.

The 24-man team visited parliament at mid-day today, and were greeted by MPs wearing red Mate Ma’a Tonga jerseys. Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala was also in parliament to welcome the team. The team later attended a luncheon and a photo shoot organised outside the parliament building.

Tonga feeling better prepared ahead of Gold Coast 7s


Tonga sevens coach Manu Vunipola is feeling much more prepared ahead of this weekend’s opening leg of the World Series on the Gold Coast.

Vunipola is standing in for regular coach Eddie Waqa, who is waiting for the outcome of a review with the Tonga Rugby Union.

Tonga heading to the Winter Olympics…


Forget Sonny Bill William’s antics, tropical Tonga has pulled their own version of Jamaica’s stunning Olympics debut – a transformed rugby player is heading to the Winter Olympics in Russia.

It’s the first time ever that Tonga, not known for its snow, has ever been at the Winter Olympics.

Tonga name 20 players with NRL experience in squad for Rugby League World Cup


Manly’s Penrith-bound prop Kite will captain the side, which includes 11 NRL regulars and 20 players of NRL experience – with Sea Eagles winger Jorge Taufua, Parramatta front-rower Fuifui Moimoi and Penrith back-rower Sika Manu also in the 24-man group.

Kite to lead Tongan rugby league squad


NRL grand final rivals Brent Kite and Daniel Tupou headline a Tongan World Cup squad boasting plenty of muscle as they target a quarter-final clash with New Zealand.

Fisiiahi confident about World Cup


Warriors flyer Glen Fisiiahi is confident time is on his side as he targets being part of Tonga’s rugby league World Cup campaign in Britain.

Fisiiahi’s NRL season ended abruptly in mid-July when he tore a pectoral muscle in the 24-14 win over the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.

‘Ikale Tahi fundraising raised $644.85 only


Tonga coach Mana ‘Otai has announced the outcome of a fund raising held in June to help “compensate” the Ikale Tahi players who were playing for the Pacific Nations Cup 2013.

Despite the overwhelming support for the national team at the time only four donors pitched in $644.85 for the players.
