Rugby World Cup final, an elusive target for Pacific Islands

The Pacific Island nations of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga have pulled off many upsets in the Rugby World Cup, but we have yet to see one in the cup final. The Pacific Island nations are disadvantaged in rugby, and they could drastically improve their performance on the world stage.

One of the biggest problems that one can see in test rugby is the huge gap between the teams at the top and those below them.

This season has seen the first ranked nation New Zealand win every one of their tests, and the second ranked nation South Africa only lose two tests, both to New Zealand. Australia who are ranked third, have lost twice to the British and Irish Lions, three times to New Zealand, twice to South Africa and once to England. Just think about that, Australia is ranked third after winning 7 out of 14 tests for the year.

Wales 17 Tonga 7: match report

A win for Wales in a predictably physical encounter, but if the truth be told, it was a quite dreadful match that rarely looked like igniting.

The second half, scoreless as it was, must rank as one of the worst halves seen in international rugby for some time.

Tonga’uiha tuition has stood Saints prop Waller in good stead – Northampton Chronicle and Echo

Waller spent several seasons as the Tongan titan’s deputy at Saints and says he learned a lot during their time together.

Tonga’uiha moved on to Racing Metro this summer, with England loosehead Alex Corbisiero switching from London Irish to fill the void.

But Corbisiero has spent the past few weeks on the sidelines with a knee injury that has required surgery, leaving Waller to step up and show his worth.

Preview: Wales v Tonga

Wales’ growth under the guidance of coach Warren Gatland faces another tough assignment when they host Tonga in Cardiff on Friday.

The Six Nations champions have shown in their previous matches during the November Tests that they are still a force to be reckoned with on the international scene after they went on a seven-match losing streak in 2012.

Tonga have branded Shaun Edwards’ calls for rookie referee Mike Fraser to protect the Welsh team against the Pacific Islanders an “insult”.

Edwards has urged the New Zealand official to clamp down on what he claimed was “illegal” and “over the top” tackling from the Pacific Islanders during Friday night’s Millennium Stadium showdown.
