Rise in diabetes due to reluctance to change -Tonga advocate for women and children


An advocate for women and children in Tonga says the rate of diabetes is growing because many people are reluctant to change their eating habits.

A newly released study on youth diabetes by the University of the South Pacific in Tonga has found diabetes is on the rise and most young people don’t realise there is no cure.

Tonga’s 2019 games hosting will boost health says minister


That’s according to the Minister of Sport, Lord Vaea.

He says the cabinet have decided to host the games for several reasons, although it’s still not clear where the estimated ninety million US dollar costs will come from.

Lord Vaea tells Bruce Hill it’s been a while since Tonga hosted a regional sporting event.

Action needed to combat rising youth diabetes in Tonga


An increasing number of Tongas youth are found to have diabetes, a disease that is incurable, and many of them have contracted diabetes because they eat the wrong foods.A Tonga Youth Diabetes Study Report 2013, released last week recommends a national screening of youths for the disease along with a national awareness campaign.

Youth diabetes increasing in Tonga, says King


Diabetes cannot be cured, Tonga’s King Tupou VI said today and expressed concern that an increasing number of youth are being diagnosed with the disease in Tonga.

“Young people are being removed from school because of diabetes and more than half of the case studies have lost their mothers because of diabetes,” he said in launching the 2012-13 Tonga Youth Diabetes Study Report.
