The Kingdom of Tonga has begun celebrating the Heilala Festival, ahead of King Tupou VI’s birthday next week.
Matangi Tonga reports the festival will run for nine days and will include the Miss Heilala Pageant, traditional dancing and singing competitions, a secondary school brass band competition and a float parade.

Eight Tongan girls vying for the Miss Heilala crown 2013-14 made their first appearance on June 28, during an orientation program at the ‘Oholei Beach Resort, Tongatapu.
The contestants, including two local girls and five from overseas, were briefed on judging events to be held on July 1-5 at a Heilala Village on Vuna Wharf in central Nuku’alofa.
The local girls are Miss Kai Mai Burgers Lioni Palaa (25) and Miss Chateau Tonga Teuila Telefoni (19).

The Heilala Week Festival 2013 is confirmed at Vuna Wharf from June 24 through to July 6, a post on the Miss Heilala Supporters Face Book page says.
Former Miss Heilala and strong supporter of the festival, Tafolosa Kaitapu Bloomfield, shared the post and confirmed the date to her friends.
