Tonga’s Chinese Aircraft Flying Despite Warnings…


A Chinese aircraft given to Tonga has begun commercial service with full loads despite New Zealand warnings about the risks.

The new 60-seat Xian MA60 turbo-prop aircraft was earlier this year given to Tonga, forcing the New Zealand-owned Chatham Pacific Airline, which with five aircraft was the only domestic carrier in the kingdom, out of Tonga.

Why are the Chinese interested in Tonga?


The domestic airport in Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa, was eerily quiet. The friendly cafe, where three years ago I’d enjoyed the delicious locally-grown coffee, had gone. And there was no sign of my plane.Waiting with me in the shade for something to happen was a young Chinese man, booked on the same flight, returning to his wife and grocery store on the island of Hapa’ai.

Tongan PM seeks greater ties to China


The Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Li Keqiang pledged that China would advance the development of relations between China and Tonga, when he met the Tongan Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing on Monday, 22 July.

Lord Tu’ivakano told the premier that Tonga attached great importance to developing relations with China.

Chinese Premier Pledges to Advance Ties with Tonga


Premier Li Keqiang pledged on Monday to advance the development of relations between China and Tonga.

Li made the pledge during a meeting with Tongan Prime Minister Siale’ataonga Tu’ivakano at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.

Tu’ivakano expressed condolences on behalf of the Tongan government and people for the victims of an earthquake that occurred in northwest China’s Gansu Province on Monday morning.

Pacific Islands parliamentarians visit China


China is on track to achieve its Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and to establish a moderately prosperous society by 2020, Shi Guohui, the Vice-Governor of Binxian County, in central China told a Pacific Islands delegation on May 10.

The Pacific Islands delegation included14 members of parliament and three media personnel from Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the Federated States of Micronesia.
