Tonga’s high speed internet will be on show during a Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society PICISOC Conference, PacINET to be held on September 9-13 in Nuku’alofa.The annual meeting brings internet experts from around the region to discuss ICT development in the Pacific. The theme ‘Gateway of Opportunity’ reflects Tonga’s latest technological advancement with the new fibre-optic cable system that went live on August 22.

The World Bank Group, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Tonga Cable Corporation (TCC), media and others joined the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga at a ceremony at the Tonga Cable Limited building today to celebrate the arrival of high speed internet in Tonga.
At the ceremony, from the station’s control room, the King of Tonga, Tupou VI in the presence of the Prime Minister, Lord Tu’ivakano officially commissioned the service with the click of a mouse, which delivered high speed internet to the people of Tonga for the first time ever.

Tonga’s high speed internet will go live on Wednesday, August 21, with the commissioning by King Tupou VI of the project at the Tonga Cable Ltd station in Sopu.
Demonstrating the spectacular speed directly off the new fibre optic cable, Robert Bolouri the Managing Director of Tonga Cable, said that the Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC) was the only internet service provider that had signed up for the fibre optic cable at the moment.

The project costs $US34 million and is funded by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Tonga Communications Corporation.

ALCATEL-LUCENTs cable ship, Ile de re berthed at the Suva port last Sunday in preparation for the roll-out of the 837km Tonga-Fiji submarine cable system.
The cable is intended to help increase Tongas broadband internet access and affordability, as well as access to the Southern Cross cable, the main trans-Pacific system that connects Fiji, Australia and New Zealand to the United States of America.
