Brawl avoided between two colleges in Tonga, Police Called

The swift intervention of the locals at the village of Veitongo on the mainland Tongatapu in Tonga averted what could easily have been a major disaster. Last Saturday evening, about a hundred students from Tupou College, Toloa, arrived by bus to fight students of Tonga College, ‘Atele. The Tonga College students were reported to have been camping out at a residence in the area.

Police were arrived to the help of the village wardens and the students were taken into custody.

Tonga eyes wind energy future after building first turbine

Tonga’s first wind turbine could be the first step towards turning the Pacific island nation into a green energy powerhouse.

Work on the 11kW turbine in the village of Nakolo was completed this week ahead of commissioning this month.

Pacific Islands parliamentarians visit China

China is on track to achieve its Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and to establish a moderately prosperous society by 2020, Shi Guohui, the Vice-Governor of Binxian County, in central China told a Pacific Islands delegation on May 10.

The Pacific Islands delegation included14 members of parliament and three media personnel from Tonga, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Tonga’s 2019 games hosting will boost health says minister

He says the cabinet have decided to host the games for several reasons, although it’s still not clear where the estimated ninety million US dollar costs will come from.

An increasing number of Tongas youth are found to have diabetes, a disease that is incurable, and many of them have contracted diabetes because they eat the wrong foods.A Tonga Youth Diabetes Study Report 2013, released last week recommends a national screening of youths for the disease along with a national awareness campaign.

Tonga’s first wind turbine stands in Nakolo

Tonga first 11kW wind turbine is ready to be commissioned for operation in June after its construction was completed on 16 May 2013 at Nakolo in Tongatapu.Setitaia Chen, the Wind Turbine Project Manager, said the turbine will be in a position to generate power once the wind speed reaches 3.5 meters per second. It is expected that the turbine can reach a capacity of up to 11kW when the wind speed reaches a constant 9.5m/s or more.
