Why Tongan language has no word for human rights


Auckland, New Zealand: Tongan people, a product of centuries of monarchy and social hierarchy, are never born free or equal, and the Tongan language has no word for ‘rights’ as in ‘to have rights’, nor a conventional way of saying that one has a voice in something. Dr Melenaite Taumoefolau examines the gulf between modern and traditional Tongans and why the language has no term for human rights. She says the knowledge gulf between the two camps is huge.

Cabinet seeks royal authority in appointing Planning Tribunal


Nuku’alofa, Tonga: An urgent bill pushed by Cabinet last month – the National Spatial Planning And Management (Amendment) Bill 2019 – aims to replace the King’s authority in appointing the ‘Planning Tribunal’ which adjudicates appeals filed by applicants against decisions made by the National Spatial Planning Authority, a body that assesses and approves draft plans of land/development projects.

New Tonga Broadcasting HQ part of National Early Warning system


Nuku’alofa, Tonga: Ground breaking for a new headquarter building for Tonga Broadcasting Commission was held on March 29. Funded by Japan, the building is part of a multi-million pa’anga grant aid project on Nationwide Early Warning System and Strengthening Disaster Communications (NEWS).
